Around 1884, homes and businesses began to form in what would later become known as Rusk County. Ladysmith, which has become the heart of the county, was shaped around the original Soo Line Railroad. In the years to follow, the logging industry died out and farming took its place as the leading source of income for its many residents. Despite the economic changes, the one constant through all the years has been the rugged natural beauty of Rusk County. Sculpted by the receding melting glaciers, the peace and tranquility of Mother Nature herself can be found here in this Northwestern Wisconsin paradise.

Today, Ladysmith and the Rusk county area is one of Wisconsin's most cherished regions. Highlighted by the Blue Hills Area, Rusk County has 4 seasons of recreational opportunities awaiting the most active of folks. The famed Blue Hills run from northwest Rusk County westward towards Rice Lake and are given their name because of a vibrant bluish color that radiates when seen through the early morning sun. Outstanding downhill skiing at Christie Mountain and numerous all purpose trails make this one of the best winter vacation settings. A total of over 23 miles of trails and 60,000 acres of northern Wisconsin landscape are available for nature lovers and recreational enthusiasts.
