St. Croix County and the St. Croix River were important in the development of trade and travel during the early French settlements. "St. Croix" is named after a famous explorer, Monsieur St. Croix, who drowned at the mouth of the river in the seventeenth century. Farming became the main occupation in the county in the late 1800's due to the rich soil of the St. Croix prairie lands. While most of the income in the 1800s came from wheat production, dairy is currently the most important farming product.
